21

By Anthony on October 7th, 2009

Looking for a quick and easy way to define a word? well lucky you… Google has a capability to provide you accurate and extensive definitions and word meanings. It gives definitions and meanings from trusted sources like wikipedia and others.

To easily search fro a meaning or definition just go to Google home page, type “define:” (without the quotes) then the word you want to search.  ex. define:megabyte, then hit the Search Button. You’ll get a list drawn from various sites. Try it out!

I’ve been using this function on Google for a long time, I just love how Google has all these great little functions =D I don’t know about you but I always get upset whenever Google can’t find a definition for the word I am looking for, but for the most part it does a great job of finding it. Oh.. and I also love how I can type example “PA time” and it will give me the time for Pennsylvania, works great when you need to know what the time is in another state or country =D

    Till then,

    Jean

Hey thanks I never knew about this cool function for Google, I will give it a go, as I usually open a word doc and type a word in and then use the dictionairy in that, but this is much quicker.

    Cheers

Yea, it works like a function title: megabyte. It finds this word in the title of pages in the Internet. There are many such interesting functions and we should use them. Sometime they are very helpful!

It’s the easiest way to find necessary information in a short period of time, for instance when you chat online and suddenly see some strange word

So it’s as easy as typing “define:”? Why did I ever bother looking for online dictionaries. I forgot that Google is already too smart to know that. Haha~ :D

I’ve been using this for a while. I also use the currency converter. It’s easy and you don’t have to click to another site just to see the answer.

Cool tip.  I imagine you could also imbed the results page URL as a link using the word your defining as anchor text.  This might be helpful in blogs that use lots of technical terminology.

Yeah I’ve been using this as well. This is very handy when writing articles. It saves us the time instead of checking each Google search result just to find out the meaning of a word.
