A friend of mine was trying to setup Windows XP on his machine. He inserted his Windows XP setup disk and goes the through the usual process of loading and installing drivers. But when he reached the welcome screen he was presented with a problem “Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer“. I explained to him that this error normally appears when your hard disk is on an SATA or SCSI controller and Windows setup was unable to find or does not have the suitable driver. Loading the Sata driver using a Floppy disk will fix this problem but unfortunately he doesn’t have a floppy disk drive… but who has still a floppy disk drive anyway. To solve his problem I gave him the solution below.
How to easily fix Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer error
- Enter BIOS setup
- Look for the Serial ATA or SATA configuration section. (Varies on different Motherboards)
- Change the settings of the SATA controller from AHCI to IDE or Compatibility
- Save and Exit
- Run Windows setup again
